The Local Property Market
Lewes is 70 minutes from London, 40 from Gatwick and just 7 miles drive to a channel port. The surrounding downland landscape and beautiful countryside make the town and its environs a very desirable place to live. Lewes is remarkable for its rich variety of fine houses, and consequently has a buoyant property market.
Unlike many towns, where the vast majority of the housing stock is Victorian, Lewes presents a far more complex and idiosyncratic picture, with over 500 years of domestic architecture to chose from.
For some types of houses and locations, competition can be fierce, and quick action is needed to secure properties which will almost sell themselves.
In the centre of town, with its characteristically hilly streets and winding alleys (twittens), the housing stock is typically older, of mixed age and style. There is a tendency for the houses here to be narrow, and quite closely spaced. However, there are lots of surprises, and many hidden delights, views, spaces, and gardens. There are also small pockets of new development / conversions. The town centre repays investigating, preferably on foot, to be able to appreciate all its subtleties.
Moving further away, but still within walking distance from the centre, the housing tends to be larger and more varied in age. Some superb Georgian town houses and Victorian terraces dominate the main roads out of town. The side roads, especially to the West and South, have mainly Edwardian and Victorian housing, some very fine. There are, around the perimeter, skirting the downs, developments of 30-40's housing, ranging from roads with large detached properties to the curved avenues of purpose built estates. To the SW and NE there are some small pleasant estates of houses built in the last 50 years.
Lewes is full of unusual property. There is a home here to suit everyone's taste. The pictures here will give you some idea, but, if you are anxious to move to Lewes, visit the town and see for yourself.
